How to Have a Fun and Healthy Halloween

Are your little monsters hyper enough? Halloween is a time for free candy and frightful fun but all of the unhealthy treats can spook any parent. Below are a few ways to keep your kids on track.

Eat a Healthy Dinner

When the tiny tots are making the rounds on the street before dark, make sure your family eats a well-balanced dinner in-between answering the door. They will have a full tummy when you head out and be less likely to try digging into the sugar right away.

Practice Moderation

Since you are out walking door-to-door, explain to your kids that because they are getting exercise they may have a piece of candy halfway through and when they get home. November is Eat Smart Month, making it the perfect time to further teach your children that moderating their intake of candy to a few pieces after homework, exercise, and healthy meals is the best way. Plus, it will last longer!

No Self-Service

Don’t get lazy and put a bowl outside the door and don’t let the kids grab handfuls for themselves either. If you are concerned about budget or children’s’ health only give a piece or two of candy to each child. Better yet, get a few bulk bags of spooky toys like glow sticks, temporary tattoos, yo-yos, bouncy ball, etc. Two big bags of candy cost around $30 altogether, whereas cheap little toys in bags of 50-150 cost under $12.

Be the Healthy House

The place you never wanted to visit as a child actually makes a whole lot of sense now that you have your own children’s health to watch. Plenty of healthy brands make snack-size treats like sugar-free gummy bears, Halloween shaped pretzels, juice pouches, or even allergy-friendly chocolates.
