July 28th is World Hepatitis Day

This Friday, July 28 is World Hepatitis Day. At the 69th World Health Assembly in Geneva, 194 governments adopted the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Strategy on Viral Hepatitis, which includes a goal of eliminating hepatitis B and C in the next 13 years. The first ever global movement NOhep was launched by the community to eliminate viral hepatitis by 2030.

Eliminate Hepatitis

While the elimination of viral hepatitis is a public health goal, it is also an individual goal for millions of men, women, and children spanning the globe. Anyone can be affected by viral hepatitis and we all have a part to play to achieve elimination.

Why is Elimination So Important?

Viral hepatitis is one of the leading causes of death globally. It accounts for 1.34 million deaths per year, as many as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, or malaria. Combined, hepatitis B and hepatitis C cause 80 percent of liver cancer cases around the world.

90 percent of people living with hepatitis B and 80 percent living with hepatitis C are unaware. This can result in the development of fatal liver disease and unknowingly transmitting the infection to others.

The Goal of NOhep

To achieve elimination, awareness, increased diagnosis and universal vaccination, blood and injection safety, harm reduction and treatment all over the world. Any activity that addresses hepatitis is one more step towards eliminating it.
