Men’s Health Awareness Month

man with doctorWho cares more about personal health: men or women? You might guess that there isn’t much of a difference based on gender, but research shows that there is quite the gap.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality reports that men are 24 percent less likely than women to have seen a doctor in the past year. That fact is a little concerning, wouldn’t you agree?

That’s why we’re observing Men’s Health Awareness Month. June is here, and it is time to focus on the health issues that men face.

What Health Risks Should be on Your Mind?

Men and women face several of the same health risks. Men do face a unique set of potential problems. One of the biggest health concerns for men is the fact that men are less likely to be proactive about screenings and doctor visits.

Several of the leading health problems for men could be treated and prevented if early screenings and tests were performed. It makes sense: Routine checkups and screenings will provide individuals with information about their health. When armed with information, individuals are more likely to take preventative steps for the future.

Here are some leading health issues among adult men:

  • Prostate cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Heart disease

How you can observe Men’s Health Month:

Take this time to focus on your health (or help the man in your life focus on his). Since the whole month of June is dedicated to increasing the awareness of preventable health problems among men, now is the time to start.

One goal of this month is to encourage early detection and treatment of disease. Education is a huge part of this process. First, learn about potential health issues using this A-Z men’s health guide.

Second, learn about your options for screenings and tests. Many people aren’t aware that the traditional lab location suggested by your doctor is not the only option. You can have labs and screens conducted for several different health issues with or without insurance and at the location of your choice.

You have options that are both convenient and reliable. ARCpoint Labs in Kansas City offers confidential testing in the Kansas City area.

So, to all men: Don’t wait for a doctor’s visit to start caring about your health. Now is the time to be proactive.
