The Sex Superbug Is Coming! Later…

The Associated Press reported last week that the rare strain of gonorrhea called H041 was detected in Hawaii and caused an extreme scare to the rest of the United States. AP wrote the article based on a note sent to them from Honolulu. Was this ‘sex superbug’ spreading like a deadly plague?

News headlines warned people that it could be deadlier than AIDS, and it is resistant to the current antibiotics used to treat gonorrhea. This shook up people all over the world, and it is for a good reason. This particular strain is able to kill someone in a few days. This untreatable H041 gonorrhea superbug was first reported in July of 2009 and infected a Japanese sex worker, according to the Associated Press.ARCpoint Labs of Kansas City Gonorrhea

Two cases were reported in Hawaii. It turns out that the strains were actually H11S8, which is not resistant to all the antibiotics like they thought. It is resistant to azithromycyn, a different antibiotic. H11S8 is still treatable regardless of its resistance to the azithromycyn, which Hawaii state health officials confirmed.

The story is withdrawn, but it doesn’t change the fact that the digital web endured a week of chaos for the misunderstanding.

On a serious note, Gonorrhea has mutated enough to worry about strains being drug resistant. MSN.com quoted Williams Smith, the executive director of the National Coalition of STD Directors, telling NBC,

“We think that that could just be a matter of a year or two.”

In 2011, 300,000 cases of gonorrhea were reported. Gonorrhea is silent but deadly, since the affected individual shows no signs of the infection. Everybody needs to make sure we stay alert with this.

Now, it is more important than ever to be safe when being sexually active. You can wear a condom, but abstaining will be the only true way of keeping free from potentially hazardous STDs like gonorrhea. Make sure you think about what you are doing when you are engaging in sexual activities.
