Is Tobacco a Threat to Health & Development?

man killing his health and development for tobacco

Every year, on the last day of May, a worldwide initiative goes into action to highlight the health and other risks associated with tobacco use, as well as advocate for policies that will reduce tobacco consumption.

The Campaign

Its aim is to demonstrate the threats that tobacco poses to the development and sustainability of every country, including the health and economic well-being of all citizens. It also proposes measures that governments and the public should take to promote health and development by confronting the global tobacco crisis.

Goals of World No Tobacco Day

  • To emphasize the links between using tobacco products, tobacco control, and sustainable development in all countries.
  • To encourage countries to include tobacco control in their national responses to the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
  • To combat the tobacco industry’s interference in political processes and, in turn, lead to better national tobacco control.
  • To encourage the public to participate in national, regional, and global endeavors to develop and implement development strategies and achieve goals that prioritize tobacco control.
  • To demonstrate how every individual can contribute to creating a sustainable and tobacco-free world by committing to never start using tobacco products or by quitting them.

Achieve a More Sustainable World

A drastic decrease in the use of tobacco products will help the entire world become more environmentally stable. Besides saving lives and reducing health consequences, complete tobacco control also tackles the adverse environmental impact of tobacco growing, manufacturing, trade and consumption.

“Tobacco control can break the cycle of poverty, contribute to ending hunger, promote sustainable agriculture and economic growth, and combat climate change. Increasing taxes on tobacco products can also be used to finance universal health coverage and other development programs of the government.” (WHO)

People can be more influential than governments, they can commit to never take up tobacco products or quit their habit which will protect their health and those exposed to second-hand smoke. Money not spent on tobacco can be used for essentials like healthy food, healthcare, and education.
