Weird Lyme Disease Symptoms & Tick Prevention

Summer begins this week, so it’s time to get the last of the tick information out. An issue that we have seen through the end of 2016 up to now is the mild winter and hot, humid spring. This is weather that tends to lead to heightened tick populations during the summer.

Many of us may have forgotten about or don’t know very much about Lyme disease because who really gets it? If you’ve been having odd symptoms that specialists just can’t figure out or if you are going to or live in tick-dense areas, read on to make sure you don’t get Lyme disease this summer.

Symptoms

Hallmark symptoms of Lyme disease include:

Bull’s eye rash: 3 to 30 days after an infected tick bite, a rash will begin to develop and can spread up to 12 in wide. The rash is usually not painful or itchy. If you cannot see a rash, try looking on your scalp, it might be hiding anywhere.

Flu-like symptoms: Fever, chills, fatigue, body aches, and headaches.

Joint pain: Arthritis symptoms presenting in the joints, especially swelling in the knees.

Less Common Symptoms

  • Heart problems, such as irregular heartbeat
  • Eye inflammation
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Severe fatigue

Some cases reported symptoms of ALS, MS, fibromyalgia, and dementia — this is what earned it the nickname “the great imitator.” One pretty famous case recently is Kris Kristofferson, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. After many years of mental deterioration, a physician tested him for Lyme and turned his life around.

Tick Prevention

What you need to do to prepare for tick season is simple,

  • wear long pants and long sleeves when possible
  • Always wear a hat in wooded areas
  • In tall grasses, wear long pants tucked into long socks or boots
  • Use insect repellent with a 20 percent higher concentration of DEET
  • Check yourself as quickly as possible
  • Shower to rid yourself of possible loose ticks
  • Use tweezers to pull gently and carefully to remove a tick

Remember, Lyme disease can happen to anyone, even if they have already had it. Ticks also carry other nasty illnesses like Colorado tick fever and babesiosis.
